What is GSM and why does it matter?

GSM stands for grams per square metre — it measures how densely woven a towel's fabric is. Higher GSM generally means a thicker, more absorbent, more durable towel. Lower GSM towels are lighter and dry faster but absorb less.

  • 300–400 GSM — lightweight, quick-dry, common in budget and gym towels
  • 400–600 GSM — the everyday sweet spot for bath towels; absorbent without being too heavy to dry quickly. Malmal Home's cotton towels sit in this range.
  • 600+ GSM — plush, hotel-style towels; very absorbent but slower to dry, heavier to wash

What size bath towel should I buy?

A standard bath towel measures around 27 x 54 inches (68 x 137 cm) — large enough to wrap around an adult. Bath sheets run larger, 35 x 60 inches or more. Hand towels are typically 16 x 28 inches, and face towels around 12 x 12 inches.

How to check if a towel is genuinely good quality

  1. Feel the pile — it should spring back after you press it, not stay flattened
  2. Check the hem — double-stitched edges last longer through repeated washing
  3. Look at the weave — tightly looped terry cloth holds up better than loosely woven fabric
  4. Ask about wash-testing — a towel that's been tested through 50+ wash cycles without thinning is a good sign of durability
